John 17:17: “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.”
Jesus makes it clear in His High Priestly prayer that only God’s Word is the Truth.
There is no other absolute and perfect standard of truth because God alone is the source and standard of absolute truth.
In Romans 3:4a, Paul states that “God is true and every man is a liar” (emphasis added) for the purpose of proving that ALL fall short of God’s standard of perfection. “There is no one righteous, not even one.” God alone is perfectly righteous and the only worthy source of truth.
God is the God of Truth (KJV) Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 31:5; Isaiah 65:16; Jeremiah 10:10 and because of His goodness He has chosen to give us His eternal Word.
II Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV): “All scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”
Some English translations use the word, “inspiration” which theologically explains the process God used to give us His word. In simple terms, inspiration means that God is the author of scripture. The Greek text makes it even more clear by saying, ““All scripture is God breathed”. This means God has given us His exact words by His divine authority and authorship.
Peter explains it this way in II Peter 1:21: “For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.” The Holy Spirit breathed on men to write the exact word of God.
Jesus said in Matthew 5:18: “For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” Jesus is saying that every single letter and every stroke of the pen was used to write God’s exact Word. Not only was it flawlessly recorded but it will also be completed as He has proclaimed. It will never pass away because it is eternal.
God’s Word is the very breath of God to mankind. We have received the holy, perfect and exact Word of Almighty God. Matthew 4:4: “Man shall not live by bread alone. but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Every single word of scripture is from God and is profitable. This is why the Holy Spirit moved Paul to use the word, “All” to say that all scripture is necessary.
Because ALL scripture is God’s Word then we should read, study and meditate on ALL of God’s Word not for the purpose of knowledge but a deeper love for God.
